Oud oil is a concentrated, precious material. Applying it correctly ensures you get maximum fragrance life from every drop. Poor application wastes oil and shortens the scent duration. Here is the proper technique.
Choose the Right Pulse Points
Pulse points are areas where blood vessels are close to the skin surface. The warmth at these points helps the fragrance develop and project. The best pulse points for oud oil are:
- Wrists (inner side)
- Neck (sides, below the ears)
- Behind the ears
- Inner elbows
- Behind the knees (for longer-lasting effect)
Apply a Small Amount
Oud oil is highly concentrated. Start with a single drop on one wrist, then press your wrists together to transfer half the oil to the other wrist. Do not rub — pressing is sufficient and rubbing can break down the fragrance molecules.
Let It Develop
Oud oil changes over time. The initial application will smell different from the dry-down 30 minutes later. Let the oil sit on your skin for a few minutes before judging the fragrance. The warmth of your body will gradually release different notes.
Moisturize First
Applying oud oil to well-moisturized skin extends longevity significantly. Dry skin absorbs oil quickly, shortening the fragrance life. Use an unscented moisturizer on your pulse points before applying the oil.
Store Properly
Keep your oud oil in its amber glass bottle, tightly closed, in a cool dark place. Heat and light degrade the oil over time. Properly stored oud oil can last 3-5 years while maintaining its fragrance quality.
